A Late Winter Bird Walk

Snow drops and crocus are blooming. We still have plenty of snow and ice in the yard but at lower elevations spring is in the air. A walk along the river revealed how great winter birding can be. Hundreds of beautiful white Tundra swans and thousands of Canada Geese and Sandhill Cranes are still here wintering over. We spotted at least a dozen or more young and mature Bald Eagles, Northern harriers over every open field and gorgeous little Kestrels rarely out of sight. Wigeons, Green and Cinnamon Teals, Shovelers and Pintails, Ringed Neck Ducks and American Coots filled the marshes and ponds. The call of a Great Horned Owl focused our attention in an attempt to discover its location. Twenty minutes of searching the trees and success. There the owl was sitting on a branch its body next to the tree trunk as it blended into its surroundings. What more could one ask from a short birding walk so close to home.
Happy Birding.

Hawks From Every Angle

Birds of prey are fascinating to all: birders and non-birders alike. Identification of birds of prey can be tricky. Great distances can be involved, similarities of species when seen at a distance and difficulty in seeing enough details to make a positive identification male raptor watching a challenge. Jerry Liguori has written a book i recommend highly: Hawks From Every Angle: How to Identify Raptors in Flight. He focuses on the flight positions raptors take and shows how the light you are observing in can make an interpretation of what you are seeing more difficult. Jerry Ligouri is an experienced observer at hawk migration sites and illustrates nicely how to identify raptors in flight. A highly recommended book!
