Summer Greetings

This first day of summer is coming to a close with 130 to 150 cawing crows passing overhead. The direction of their nightly roost varies a little but it is always in a westerly direction from here. Raucous, begging young crows have been following their parents from tree to tree throughout the day. The neighborhood has been very lively. Begging groups of fledgling bush tits chasing their parents have been flitting through the trees and shrubs. Each day I watch the robins incubating their four blue eggs in their nest on top of the porch pillar. In just a few days they should be hatching by my calculations. And then the messy fun will begin with the adults flying back and forth to the nest with worms and other food for the nestlings. As they grow the nest and porch will accummulate white fecal matter until they are ready to jump out of the nest and run off the porch towards cover. The violet green swallows will be the next to be fledging after the robins. Their nest box under the eve on the east side of our house has been busy with comings and goings.

Happy Summer

Birdingtop500.com

An interesting site I stumbled upon is Fatbirder's Top 500 Websites. Lots of links all around the world that are interesting to check out. If you are travelling and want to locate birding tours and good locations for birding the site has many resources listed: birdingtop500.com. Also don't forget to check out storchennest.de for great webcam shots of a stork nest and young storks in the Spreewald, SE of Berlin, Germany.

Fledgling Red Tail Hawks

The Red Tail Hawk chicks have fledged from their nest on the fire escape of the Portland, Oregon office building which has been their home the last few weeks. One has disappeared. The other flew to the top of a parking garage on the next block where it spent the day on a high ledge on the edge of the structure. The female Red Tail has made several feeding trips bringing rats for its young one to feed upon. One can only hope this young hawk will survive the perils of the city and the traffic below while it matures enough to fly well and feed itself. Best wishes my young feathered friend!
