Birds and Nature

I discovered an interesting web site "birdnature.com" throught an e-mail sent to me from NorWestLeps who are devoted to butterflies. Birdnature.com has a section of their site with reprints of Bird and Nature magazine articles from the late 1890's and early 1900's. Butterflies and other aspects of natural history are covered as well as birding. You will find much interesting reading, as I have, about amatuer natural history enthusiasts of that era. Not all the information is accurate from these 100 year old articles but you will gain insights into the enthusiasm people felt for observing and studying nature and the important contributions the "amatuer' has made to our understanding and apprectiation of birds, butterflies and other aspects of the natural world. Bookmark "birdnature.com"

We spent a rainy weekend on the Oregon Coast birding and storm watching. When the weather is gray I especially appreciate quality waterproof binoculars like my Swarovski's for there clear, bright view. I was able to spot several Bald Eagles soaring very high in the storm clouds above the coastal mountains. Most binoculars perform fairly well on bright, sunny days. It is in the dimmer light of dawn, dusk and gray days that good optics are so wonderful.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology

A wonderful resource for birders is the Cornell University Lab of Ornithology in Ithaca, New York. The Macaulay Library has the world's largest archive of bird, insect, fish, frog and mammal sounds. The lab also has 700 hours of video showing 300 species of birds. You can link to the Macaulay Library's online collections at www.birds.cornell.edu/MacaulayLibrary. The catalog is directly accessible at www.animalbehaviorarchive.org.

You will need RealPlayer to listen to the sounds and a video player like QuickTime to watch the videos.
If you really would like to learn about birds look into Cornell's correspondence course on ornithology.
A terrific resource!
