FOCUS POINT - Cub scouts provide nestboxes for migratory birds

Jerry McNair and Terrie Gartman help cub scout, Mason Gartman, build a bluebird nesting house at the Heard Natural Science Museum Wednesday afternoon.

Allen Cub Scout Pack 708 spent yesterday afternoon at The Heard Natural Science Museum & Wildlife Sanctuary in McKinney, building 10 nestboxes for the wetlands migratory bird program at the sanctuary.

Pack Leader Terri Gartman, Heard volunteer Sandy Campbell and Heard naturalist Kelly Rypkema supervised the third-graders as they completed the construction. Their parents also participated in the project.

Because it is located along a major north-south migratory route, The Heard is increasingly pivotal in providing nesting spots for birds which traditionally lay eggs and raise young in "cavities," sanctuary officiasl said. Among the most sought-after are Bluebirds and Prothonotary Warblers, both of which use Heard nestboxes each spring.
