Mongolia is home to over 400 species of birds. Mongolia
has a rich composition of bird species due to the migration
routes from Pacific and Indian Oceans to the Mediterranean
Sea and to the Arctic Ocean and northern tundra. The best
seasons to visit are the migration times. In the Gobi you
may see the desert warbler, houbara bustard, saxaul sparrow,
sand goose, finch, cinereous vulture and many more. In the
steppes: the gray demoiselle crane, a variety of hoopoes,
odd eagle, vulture, upland buzzard, steppe eagle, variety
of falcons including saker falcon, black kite and variety
of owls and hawks. In the mountains: ptarmigan, finch, woodpecker,
owl, Lammergeyers, Altai snowcock. In the Lakes: Dalmtian
pelicans, hooded cranes, relict gulls and bar headed geese.
Among most popular places for above-mentioned birds in Mongolia
are Ugii Lake, Orkhon waterfall and Hugnu khan National park.
These areas are the best spot to see forest, steppe and water
birds.

The Central Coast of California is one of the United States
premier birding destinations. Located on the Pacific Flyway,
the Central Coast boasts a large over-wintering bird population
in addition to abundant resident species. San Luis Obispo
County has a recorded bird population of 442 bird species,
which is over half of the nation's total avian diversity of
810 species! Sunset magazine recently listed the Central Coast
as one of the top five birding destinations in the west (November,
2002). Over the years the Los Osos/Morro Bay area has consistently
been in the top five of the Big Sit, a 24-hour single point
bird count. In 2002, Los Osos recorded 122 species during
the Big Sit, placing it a full 20 species higher than the
next highest count. Bird counts during the winter bird festival
in Morro Bay consistently average above 200 species.
