Utah State Bird - California Gull The sea gull, Larus californicus, was selected as the state bird of Utah in 1955. The gull is considered the state bird of Utah probably because these gulls saved the people of the State by eating up the Rocky mountain crickets which were destroying the crops in 1848. A statue in Salt Lake City commemorates the event. Similar to Herring Gull but smaller, with darker gray mantle, dark eye, reddish eye ring, and greenish legs. Bill of breeding adult has red spot overlapped by black. Winter and immature birds have black subterminal bar on bill and lack red eye ring of adults. A common inland gull.
