binocular reviews
The best birding binoculars in the world are useless if you don't have them with you. You know the story. You left them home because they were too heavy and you weren't intending to go birding anyway. But birds can turn up anywhere, any time. A black-throated blue warbler might materialize in the mall's parking-lot shrubbery. Or a tufted duck could wander in from Europe and light on the river you drive across every day on the way to work. These are some of the birding binoculars our staff found noteworthy...

Brunton Compact Eterna 8x25 and 10x25

Brunton
Compact Eterna 8x25 and 10x25

Roof Prism
$204.95
These are the only binoculars we tested that you can use in the case. Brunton's unique BinoGlove wraps the binocular like a baby in a bunting. This might be helpful if you combine birding with rock climbing or other rough activities. With the binocular padded in swaddling clothes you can still turn the focus knob and adjust the interpupillary distance. The binocular can also be used bare, because the strap attaches either to the BinoGlove or to the body.If you don't like losing your lens caps the first week you get new binoculars, you may appreciate the way all four lens caps are hinged to the binoculars. Birding Binoculars - You can rotate the hinges' position, in case you wish to use the lens caps to shield your eyes from the sun. These binoculars are nitrogen filled, phase corrected, and waterproof. The eye relief of 17mm in the 10x25 and 18.5 in the 8x25 exceeds that of nearly all pocket binoculars. The focus knob is smooth and easy to turn.

Brunton Epoch binocular review

Brunton Epoch 7.5 x 43
Birding Binoculars
$1304.95
The Brunton 7.5 x 43 Epoch Binocular is the pinnacle of modern binocular technology. The Epoch’s remarkable prowess and luxury performance are sure to rouse the spirit of the most serious outdoor enthusiasts. It’s the ultimate tool for building your life list of rare bird sightings, or for scouting a technical ice route on a Himalayan first ascent. The crown jewel of the Brunton Epoch is the SF roof prism—a prism previously only used in high-powered telescopes. Most binoculars use the excellent Bak-4 prism, but the SF is simply a step above. Five set screws grip the whole assembly, making it the most secure prism on earth—you’ll need superhuman powers to knock it out of alignment. Birding Binoculars = Flat-light Multi-coating on the objective lenses delivers true color, which adds to the spectacular clarity of the Epoch sight picture. Equally impressive, the variable speed focus is finer and slower from 30 feet in, and lightning fast from 30 feet out. The near focus is a mere 36 inches. If you wear corrective lenses, you’ll especially appreciate the locking, multi-step eyecup system that holds the eyecup’s focus where you need it, with or without glasses. Brunton’s products are some of the most rugged, durable instruments on the planet; the Epoch is no exception. The lightweight, indestructible magnesium alloy construction will resist almost any force of nature, and the nitrogen purged body will never fog or leak, even when submerged.
